Dramas You’re Missing Out On January 16th, 2012

Whether you’ve got basic cable or Direct TV there are a lot of great dramas out there you may not be watching. Here’s a list of our favorites for you to check out the next time you see them on the listings
Brothers and Sisters: This ABC staple has been around for years but it’s still just as entertaining as ever. Sally Field is a great anchor for a compelling family drama and you’ll be hard pressed not to get sucked into this one.
Breaking Bad: If you like your dramas to have a bit of an edge, watch this show. There’s nothing else like it out there and Brian Cranston should win actor of the year, every year, for as long as he plays Walt. Be aware that there’s violence and bad subject matter.
Mad Men: Mad Men is a critical darling but it actually seems people aren’t watching it based on statistics. It really is that good. Catch up on past season DVDs then get ready to tune back in this spring when it’s back for its next and possible final season.

What Television Does Not Tell You About Real Life. December 1st, 2011

Television has always been away for people to escape reality. As a society, we love being entertained. Our choice of entertainment on television may vary. For some it is comedies, others it is dramas; it could be sports or game shows; or for some, they escape reality by watching reality television. No matter what choice you make, television gives a false perspective about real life”especially reality television.

A great example of being out of touch with real life is found in crime dramas. We all enjoy a good mystery. There is something alluring about “Who done it?” or “How they did it” that leads us to wanting more. But there is always something that does not seem right with these shows. We know that crimes occur everyday, so that part is correct. What doesn’t seem right is the attitude of many of the detectives and first responders. They come across as being apathetic toward an event.

A police psychologist said that real police work is different from television. First, crime is not solved within an hour. It takes time. Second, not all Crime Scene Investigators drive around in Hummers; in fact, for some CSIs they drive around in a Ford Minivan. Third thing he mentioned was that homicides and deaths are always difficult for first responders”especially when dead children are involved. Therefore, this police psychologist said that it is mandatory for first responders to have a group session as soon as possible about the events they partook in. This helps them to get a hold of what happened, and let it out instead of holding it inside. Plus, there are no quips at these crime scenes.

Overall, television is a great medium to enter new, different worlds. But when it comes to real life, television falls short of real life.

Learning To Deal With Life’s Issues Through Television. September 27th, 2011

Many are against television watching today. They say that it teaches us nothing, and is part of the problem that is causing obesity in America. I tend to disagree with these naysayers. Television programming is becoming much more mature, and I don’t mean more sex and foul language. I mean that there is a lot to learn from these shows now.

You tune into a gritty crime drama and it’s about solving a murder case. What you don’t realize is what you’re taking away from Read the rest of this entry »

Are The Nay Sayers Right? Television Is Bad? September 24th, 2011

These days when people say television is bad for you, they don’t just mean bad for your eyesight; they mean it’s bad for YOU. But is television really that bad? How can the stories we watch on a screen influence our lives that much?
Violence, Fear and Sex
The clean mystery crime dramas are ancient relics of the past. Characters with outdated mannerisms and story lines appear silly next to modern day crime dramas. It’s not hard Read the rest of this entry »
